It has been a while since I was pregnant (DD is 8), and I just learned that a lot of the places like Motherhood or A Pea in the Pod are no longer operating stores and are only online. Are there any places in the area to shop for maternity clothes in person? Second hand boutiques, or Gap/H&M locations that have maternity in store (I know a lot don’t)? I know Target has some options, but I didn’t really care for what they had on display. I really prefer to try on clothes before I buy if I can and would prefer to avoid the hassle of online returns. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

OP here - Thanks for the feedback! I am also in DC (Takoma), but I do have a car and am willing to go out to either the VA or MD suburbs if I need to. Honestly, a drive would be a good excuse for some rare alone time 
so others, I’ll take any suggestions you have!

There is a consignment boutique called Bellies and Babies in Del Ray, Alexandria that carries maternity clothes. (Get off at Braddock Road Metro and walk about a mile down Mt. Vernon Ave. Should take you about 20 min.) I didn't see anything that worked for me, but then I was looking for petites, and petite maternity clothes are basically impossible to find anywhere. https://www.belliesbabies.com/

Target and Kohls are the only new stores I could find with in person maternity clothes and the selection at kohls is less than target. The Growing Years in Kensington and Kid to Kid in Rockville are both kid consignment shops with small maternity sections.

Agree that the only places I could find anything in person were H&M and target. You will find a lot of secondhand items from peeing a pod and motherhood on resell sites like Poshmark, but again you would have to buy it without an option to return. Unless you luck out with a consignment shop, unfortunately I think your best bet is just to order online.

You mentioned you found some at H&M - do you know which locations have maternity in person?

Also Macy's supposedly has some? Maybe the department stores picked up some of the slack since the specialty maternity stores closed.?
Yeah when I realized that all these stores closed, I folded uop my maternity clothes and put them in the attic instead of giving them away.
Like another PP, I needed petites, and I assembled a hard-found wardrobe mostly from Motherhood Maternity that fit me, so I'm keeping it for future pregnancies.

Old Navy and Gap are owned by the same parent company. Theoretically you can try clothes on at Old Navy and order higher end stuff from Gap.

To those saying Old Navy, maybe call ahead first. The location near me doesn’t keep maternity clothes in the store.

I bought a lot online and returned. H&M was the best for this, because I could return in store on my lunch break. Also I liked their nursing clothes the best.
Seraphine has some stores in NYC, London and Paris, if you happen to be heading to any of those.
Once I found sizes/brands I liked, I bought a ton used online via Ebay, Poshmark, and ThreadUP.
